In a landmark agreement announced at the C5+1 Summit, Boeing and Somon Air have solidified a strategic partnership with Tajikistan’s national carrier committing to its largest-ever aircraft order. The deal, which underscores a significant investment in fleet modernization and international network expansion, involves a commitment for up to 14 new-generation Boeing jets. This includes an order for up to four widebody 787-9 Dreamliners, marking Somon Air’s first foray into operating widebody aircraft, and up to 10 fuel-efficient 737-8 single-aisle airplanes.
Abdulkosim Valiev, CEO of Somon Air, emphasized that this fleet expansion is a pivotal step in the airline’s growth strategy. The introduction of the 787-9 will be instrumental in launching new intercontinental routes from its hub at Dushanbe International Airport, providing passengers with superior comfort on long-haul flights. The 737-8, meanwhile, will form the backbone of the carrier’s short and medium-haul network, replacing older models and creating a modernized, all-737 MAX fleet for regional travel. This dual-type fleet is designed to offer exceptional operational flexibility, allowing Somon Air to adjust its capacity based on evolving market demand.
A core benefit of this modernization is a dramatic improvement in fuel efficiency. Both the 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX families are renowned for their advanced performance, offering a 20-25% reduction in fuel use and emissions compared to the previous generation of aircraft they will replace. This translates directly into lower per-seat costs and reduced maintenance expenses, enhancing the airline’s operating economics. The versatility and outstanding range of these models provide Somon Air with the essential tools to scale its operations effectively and compete on a broader stage.
The agreement also carries substantial economic importance for the United States, supporting an estimated 11,000 jobs across its aerospace industry. For Somon Air, established in 2008, this order reinforces its commitment to the highest standards of flight safety, service quality, and innovation. By selecting Boeing as its sole strategic partner for this transformative order, the airline is positioned to significantly grow its route network, connecting Tajikistan to more destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East with one of the world’s most advanced and passenger-pleasing aircraft families.
