Embraer Defense & Security has announced a major expansion of the A-29 Super Tucano’s mission profile, developing a new operational concept to counter unmanned aerial systems (UAS) effectively and affordably. This initiative leverages the aircraft’s inherent strengths and integrates new technologies to address one of the most pressing challenges in modern warfare.
The newly defined CONOPS (Concept of Operations) utilizes the Super Tucano’s operational flexibility and integrates advanced sensors and weaponry. Key to this new role are specific datalinks for receiving target data and cueing, coupled with an Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) sensor for precise laser tracking and designation. The aircraft will then employ its existing arsenal of laser-guided rockets and wing-mounted .50 caliber machine guns to neutralize hostile drones. This approach provides a low-cost, persistent, and hard-hitting solution for air forces facing proliferating drone threats.
“The recent conflicts worldwide have shown the urgent need for accessible and effective solutions to counter drones,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security. “The A-29 is the ideal tool for this mission. We are expanding its capabilities to ensure our customers can meet the most recent challenges, adding counter-UAS to its already extensive and proven mission set.”
The A-29 Super Tucano is uniquely positioned for this role. As a rugged, turboprop aircraft capable of operating from austere, unimproved airstrips, it offers persistence and forward basing options that are often impractical for faster jet aircraft. With over 600,000 global flight hours, the platform is renowned for its reliability, low operating costs, and multi-mission versatility. Its current missions include advanced pilot training, close air support (CAS), armed reconnaissance, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), and border patrol.
By integrating counter-drone capabilities, Embraer is ensuring the combat-proven Super Tucano remains a vital and relevant asset for its 22 operator air forces worldwide. This upgrade provides nations with a cost-effective force multiplier, allowing them to defend their airspace against evolving unmanned threats without the need for a dedicated, expensive fleet. The A-29 continues to solidify its status as the most effective and adaptable multi-mission tactical aircraft in its class.
