In a landmark deal that opens a new chapter in their long-standing partnership, Lufthansa Technik and the Cathay Group have signed their most extensive maintenance agreement to date. This multi-year contract, the largest in the history of their collaboration, designates Lufthansa Technik as the exclusive provider of Total Component Maintenance (TCM) for a significant portion of Cathay’s fleet.
The comprehensive six-year agreement, commencing in October, covers component support for 72 aircraft. This includes Cathay’s fleet of 20 Boeing 747 freighters and 52 Boeing 777 passenger aircraft. As part of the TCM services, Lufthansa Technik will implement its “power-by-the-hour” model, a comprehensive solution that manages all component repair and overhaul needs. This approach is tailored to provide Cathay Pacific with maximum operational stability, high fleet reliability, and optimized cost efficiency by converting maintenance costs into predictable, flying-hour-based expenses.
Keith Brown, Director of Engineering at Cathay, highlighted the significance of the contract, noting that entrusting Lufthansa Technik with maintenance for more than one-third of their fleet underscores the airline’s confidence in their partner’s technical expertise. He expressed anticipation for a strong and enduring collaboration that aligns with Cathay’s operational priorities.
Echoing this sentiment, Dennis Kohr, Senior Vice President of Corporate Sales for Asia Pacific at Lufthansa Technik, described the signing as a “highlight of the year.” He emphasized that the agreement is a major milestone that demonstrates the deep confidence Cathay places in their capabilities, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to expand the partnership through this unique and comprehensive support program.
