Lufthansa Technik and HENSOLDT take the “black box” to an all new level

by Jesmitha

Lufthansa Technik and HENSOLDT have launched a next-generation flight recorder system for the Airbus A320 family, setting a new industry benchmark. This innovation is a direct response to stringent new regulations, such as the FAA Reauthorization Act 2024, which mandates that Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVR) and Flight Data Recorders (FDR)—collectively known as “black boxes”—must store data for 25 hours, a significant increase from the previous 2-hour requirement.

The new SferiRec devices far surpass these legal demands. The CVR can store up to 45 hours of audio and 170 hours of datalink recordings, while the FDR boasts a massive 1,600-hour capacity. A major breakthrough is the “on-wing readout” capability. Using a special kit with software installed on a standard laptop, maintenance crews can download data without physically removing the recorders. This eliminates the need for costly replacement units and streamlines maintenance operations, a critical advantage in times of limited spare parts and hangar capacity.

This retrofit solution is a true “plug & play” system, designed as a direct one-to-one replacement for existing units on the A320, simplifying the upgrade process for airlines. The recorders also feature a significantly higher Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), drastically reducing unscheduled removals and enhancing overall reliability. With its certified design organization, Lufthansa Technik ensures seamless integration and provides global, around-the-clock technical support for this advanced recorder technology.
