Rohde & Schwarz Australia has secured a definitive agreement with Austal Ships to supply its advanced NAVICS integrated communications systems for the first two new Australian Border Force (ABF) Evolved Cape Class Patrol Boats (ECCPB). This contract reinforces the ongoing collaboration between the two companies, following the successful delivery of eight NAVICS-equipped patrol boats to the Royal Australian Navy. The new vessels are currently under construction at Austal’s shipyard in Henderson, Western Australia, and are destined to significantly enhance the ABF’s frontline maritime patrol and response capabilities.
The NAVICS system represents a major technological leap, revolutionizing on-board communications. It is built on a modern, proprietary IP-based voice-over-IP communications switching architecture. A key feature is its implementation of a sophisticated Multi-Level Security (MLS) framework, ensuring robust and secure information exchange for the patrol vessels. This positions the ABF with a state-of-the-art, secure communications infrastructure.
Company officials highlighted the strategic importance of this award. Rohde & Schwarz Australia’s role as the communications system integrator (CSI) on this project, coupled with its similar role on the major Hunter Class Frigate Program, demonstrates a significant and growing sovereign capability within Australia. This sovereign CSI and service delivery capability, built over four decades of operation in the country, is a point of pride and a key asset for national defence. The selection by the Commonwealth validates continued investment in this local expertise. Austal Defence Australia also emphasized that the long-standing relationship with Rohde & Schwarz strengthens its supply chain and ensures the integration of advanced, reliable tactical communication solutions for its defence clients.
