Swedish defence and security company Saab has announced a strategic investment of USD 10 million in Pythom, a space technology company with Swedish-American operations developing lightweight and rapidly deployable rockets. The investment positions Saab as the lead investor in Pythom’s recent funding round, aimed at accelerating the deployment of the startup’s innovative launch systems.
This move is a direct component of Saab’s strategy to address capability gaps in the space domain, accelerate innovation critical to national security, and bolster Sweden’s sovereign space capabilities. Pythom’s focus on creating affordable, simple, and quickly mobilised rockets aligns with Saab’s long-term vision for a more dispersed and resilient launch infrastructure, which is increasingly vital for modern defence.
“The need for flexible and resilient space access is more important than ever,” said Marcus Wandt, Head of Group Strategy and Technology at Saab. “Pythom’s vision and technology offer a unique opportunity to advance Sweden’s and its allies’ space capabilities in a way that is both pragmatic and forward-looking. We are proud to support their journey toward their first orbital flight.”
Pythom, founded with Swedish roots and operating in both Sweden and the United States, is pioneering an approach to rocketry that prioritises operational speed and cost-effectiveness. Their design philosophy aims to make space access more flexible and resilient, reducing reliance on large, fixed launch sites and complex logistics.
The investment underscores Saab’s ambition to contribute to emerging global defence requirements related to space. By partnering with an agile, innovative firm like Pythom, Saab not only fosters cutting-edge technology development but also strengthens the broader European and transatlantic space ecosystem. The collaboration is expected to fast-track Pythom’s development timeline, bringing its vision of agile launch services closer to reality and providing a new tool for secure and responsive space access.
