Thales to Modernize Royal Thai Navy’s Flagship Carrier with New Control System

by Jesmitha

At the Defense & Security 2025 exhibition, Thales and its Thai partner, Universal Communication Systems Co. Ltd. (UCS), signed a contract to equip the Royal Thai Navy’s (RTN) aircraft carrier, HTMS Chakri Naruebet, with an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS). This upgrade marks the first IPMS for the RTN and a significant step in modernizing the 28-year-old flagship, Southeast Asia’s sole aircraft carrier.

The IPMS will serve as the vessel’s central operational nerve center, integrating with combat and navigation systems. It will provide real-time monitoring and automation for the ship’s mechanical, electrical, and damage control systems. This technological leap is designed to enhance operational effectiveness, safety, and the crew’s decision-making support in evolving maritime threat environments.

The project deepens the 55-year partnership between Thales and the RTN, whose fleet is already extensively equipped with Thales systems. A key element is the comprehensive technology transfer to UCS, strengthening Thailand’s defence industrial base. This initiative will enable in-country maintenance and sustainment, boosting the RTN’s long-term self-reliance for this critical national asset.
