Raytheon Delivers 500th ESSM Block 2 to U.S. Navy

Raytheon, a key defense contractor, has achieved a significant production milestone with the delivery of the 500th Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 2 to the U.S. Navy. This advanced surface-to-air missile is a cornerstone of modern naval warfare, providing reliable and robust ship self-defense against a complex spectrum of air and sea-surface threats. The delivery underscores a sustained and successful manufacturing effort, for which Raytheon is proactively investing in infrastructure and raw material procurement to ensure continued production flow. The company has outlined ambitious plans to nearly double the current production rates by June 2026, a move that will significantly enhance inventory levels for the U.S. and its allied partners.

The ESSM Block 2 represents a substantial evolution from its Block 1 predecessor, incorporating several critical technological upgrades that bolster its defensive capabilities. Its most significant enhancement is an upgraded guidance system featuring a sophisticated dual-mode seeker, which combines both active and semi-active radar. This advanced seeker provides greater accuracy and resistance to electronic countermeasures in challenging engagement environments. Furthermore, the missile boasts increased maneuverability, allowing it to track and eliminate highly agile threats, thereby ensuring a protective umbrella for naval vessels.

Managed by the NATO SEASPARROW Consortium, this program is a testament to enduring international military-industrial cooperation. The consortium, composed of 12 nations including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Türkiye, and the United States, is NATO’s largest and most successful cooperative weapons project. As Barbara Borgonovi, president of Naval Power at Raytheon, stated, “ESSM plays a crucial role in helping to ensure both ship self-defense and local area defense for U.S. and allied navies around the globe.” The continued delivery of this advanced missile system equips servicemen and women with a premier defensive solution, reinforcing global maritime security through strong international partnerships.
