Republic of Korea – AGM-65G2 Maverick Tactical Missiles

by Jesmitha

The United States government has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to the Republic of Korea for AGM-65G2 Maverick air-to-surface missiles. This proposed agreement, valued at an estimated $34 million, involves the transfer of forty-four tactical missiles to enhance South Korea’s defensive capabilities. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has formally notified the U.S. Congress of this determination, a standard procedural step for major arms transfers.

This sale is framed within the context of strengthening a key alliance and supporting U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives in the Indo-Pacific region. The transaction is designed to bolster the Republic of Korea’s ability to counter current and future threats, thereby reinforcing its role as a pillar of political stability. A central benefit highlighted is the increase to South Korea’s critical air-to-ground strike capacity, which serves as a deterrent against regional aggression. Furthermore, the sale ensures continued interoperability with U.S. military forces, a crucial element for combined operations.

The principal contractor for this potential deal is RTX Corporation, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. The package includes not only the missiles but also associated support services such as U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical assistance, and logistics support. The Republic of Korea is an existing operator of the Maverick system, ensuring it will face no difficulty absorbing these new assets into its armed forces inventory. The U.S. government has assessed that this sale will not alter the basic military balance in the region, will not require the assignment of additional U.S. personnel to South Korea, and will have no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness. The final contract value may be lower than the initial estimate pending final negotiations.
