In a significant move supporting India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) vision, Embraer Defense & Security and the Mahindra Group have signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement (SCA) to promote the C-390 Millennium for the Indian Air Force’s Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme. This partnership, formalized with the opening of Embraer’s new office in New Delhi, aims to position India as a future manufacturing and MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) hub for the advanced aircraft.
The agreement deepens a collaboration initiated in February 2024, expanding its scope to include joint marketing and a comprehensive industrialisation plan. The alliance will leverage India’s robust military and aerospace ecosystem to establish local manufacturing, assembly facilities, and a resilient supply chain. This initiative is a prime example of international cooperation, blending Brazilian aerospace innovation with Indian manufacturing prowess to address India’s strategic needs and create a platform for exporting to the wider region.
The C-390 Millennium is a multi-mission aircraft renowned as the most modern in its class. It boasts superior performance with a 26-ton payload capacity, a high cruise speed of 470 knots, and the ability to operate from temporary or unpaved runways. Its versatility allows it to conduct diverse missions, including cargo and troop transport, airdrops, medical evacuation, search and rescue, and humanitarian operations. With a proven mission completion rate exceeding 99%, it offers exceptional reliability. Already selected by multiple nations, including Brazil, Portugal, South Korea, and several European countries, the C-390 is a globally recognized platform.
This partnership transcends a simple procurement deal. It embodies a shared commitment to the ‘Make in India’ philosophy, fostering technological transfer and long-term industrial growth. By creating a domestic hub for the C-390, the collaboration aims to enhance India’s security and self-reliance while strengthening the strategic ties between Brazil and India.
