Flydubai orders GEnx engines for new widebody fleet.

by Jesmitha

In a landmark expansion of its fleet, Dubai-based flydubai has placed a major order with GE Aerospace for GEnx-1B engines to power its inaugural widebody aircraft. The agreement, signed at the Dubai Airshow 2025, covers 60 engines to equip a new fleet of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, along with spare engines and a comprehensive, long-term services package.

This strategic move marks a pivotal evolution for flydubai, transitioning from a renowned regional operator to a carrier capable of long-haul travel. The investment directly supports the airline’s ambitious growth strategy, allowing it to increase capacity on existing routes, meet rising passenger demand, and introduce new, distant destinations to its network, which currently spans over 135 cities.

At the core of this fleet transformation is flydubai’s selection of the GEnx-1B engine, a choice that underscores its confidence in GE Aerospace’s technology. The engine is celebrated for its best-in-class fuel efficiency, durability, and reliable performance—critical attributes for supporting the airline’s sustained operations and expansion in diverse environments.

Ghaith Al Ghaith, Chief Executive Officer at flydubai, highlighted the importance of the partnership: “The performance and durability of our engines play an integral role in the success of our operations… We look forward to a long and successful partnership with GE Aerospace as we embark on the next chapter of growth.”

Russell Stokes, President and CEO of Commercial Engines and Services at GE Aerospace, echoed the sentiment, stating, “We are honored by flydubai’s trust and confidence… The GEnx engines will deliver reliability, efficiency and durability to power the airline’s first widebody fleet.”

The GEnx engine is a proven platform, with over 70 million flight hours since its 2011 introduction. It is GE Aerospace’s fastest-selling high-thrust engine, powering two-thirds of all operational Boeing 787 aircraft. Furthermore, in line with the industry’s sustainability goals, the GEnx engines are certified to operate on approved Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blends.

This deal not only propels flydubai into a new era of long-haul travel but also cements a key partnership with GE Aerospace, setting the stage for the airline’s next phase of global connectivity through Dubai’s aviation hub.
