GDLS-UK and Ricardo Join Forces to Develop Vehicle for the UK’s Army’s Light Mobility Programme

by Jesmitha

General Dynamics Land Systems-UK and Ricardo have announced a strategic collaboration to develop a bespoke vehicle for the British Army’s Light Mobility Vehicle Programme (LMV). This initiative is a key component of the Army’s broader Land Mobility Programme (LMP), aiming to deliver a next-generation solution.

The vehicle is based on the 5-Star NCAP-rated Ford Ranger, specifically utilizing the 2025 Ford Ranger Super Duty platform. This approach provides a best-in-class Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) and Off-The-Shelf (OTS) foundation. The partnership seamlessly integrates an upfit system, enhancing the base vehicle with militarised 4×4 and 6×6 variants to meet demanding operational requirements. Key attributes include a payload of up to 2,000kg, class-leading safety, and advanced powertrain options, ensuring exceptional mobility and durability.

This collaboration directly supports UK defence needs and national prosperity. By leveraging the extensive, UK-based capabilities of both companies, the programme aligns with the principles of the Land Industrial Strategy (LIS). The solution will be delivered from General Dynamics’ facilities in South Wales, supporting job creation, supply chain resilience, and long-term economic growth. The use of Europe’s leading pick-up truck for defence-grade modifications ensures a cost-effective and flexible platform.

Demonstrator vehicles were recently showcased at DSEI, highlighting the platform’s adaptability and readiness. The partnership combines General Dynamics’ programme leadership with Ricardo’s technical innovation, creating a powerful union of defence expertise and automotive engineering committed to delivering for the British Army.
