In a significant move to bolster its national defense capabilities, the Swedish Armed Forces have solidified a long-term partnership with Saab by extending a critical support and maintenance contract for the Gripen fighter jet fleet. This substantial order, valued at approximately SEK 4 billion, encompasses the entire Gripen family, including the C/D and the newer E models. The agreement ensures that comprehensive services will be delivered over the 2026 to 2027 timeframe, guaranteeing the operational readiness of the Swedish Air Force for years to come.
The scope of the contract is extensive, covering all essential aspects required to keep the Gripen aircraft in peak condition. This includes dedicated technical system support, a reliable supply of spare parts, and necessary repairs. Furthermore, the agreement provides for continuous training for personnel and any additional service- and maintenance work identified as crucial for uninterrupted flight operations. This holistic approach is designed to maximize the efficiency and availability of the fighter aircraft.
A key feature of this extended partnership is the inclusion of contract options that provide strategic flexibility. The Swedish Armed Forces retain the ability to place additional orders for support and maintenance until 2029, allowing them to adapt to future operational needs seamlessly. This underscores a shared commitment to long-term, sustainable defense planning.
Lars Tossman, head of Saab’s business area Aeronautics, emphasized the contract’s primary objective: to ensure a very high availability for Gripen and deliver the specialized support the Swedish Air Force requires to maintain an exceptional level of readiness. This contract extension is a major development for the Swedish defense industry, reinforcing Saab’s pivotal role as a provider of advanced aeronautics solutions and securing the technical system support and logistical backbone for one of the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft fleets.
