Saab Receives Carl-Gustaf Order from Denmark

by Jesmitha

Saab has bolstered its longstanding partnership with the Danish military through a significant new agreement. The Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) has placed an order valued at 510 million Swedish Krona (SEK) for the advanced Carl-Gustaf M4 multi-role weapon system. This contract includes the delivery of the man-portable recoilless rifles themselves, a variety of specialised ammunition, and essential training equipment. Scheduled for execution between 2026 and 2028, this procurement ensures the Danish Armed Forces will continue to operate with one of the world’s most versatile infantry support weapons.

The Carl-Gustaf system, affectionately known as the “Dysekanon” (Muff Cannon) in Danish service, is not a new tool for Denmark’s troops. Their relationship with the platform stretches back to the 1970s, with the armed forces having initially acquired the latest M4 variant in 2022. This new order represents a substantial expansion of that modernized capability. The M4 model is a substantial evolution, being significantly lighter and shorter than its predecessors while incorporating advanced features like a programmable fire control system for unparalleled engagement flexibility.

Görgen Johansson, Head of Saab’s business area Dynamics, emphasized the system’s critical role: “The Carl-Gustaf M4 offers unmatched precision, portability, and a wide range of ammunition options. This ensures that Danish forces are well-equipped to handle diverse and evolving threats on the modern battlefield. We look forward to continuing our long-standing support for the Danish Armed Forces.”

As a reusable recoilless rifle, the Carl-Gustaf is designed for the full spectrum of modern combat missions. Its strength lies in its adaptability; a single weapon can engage armored vehicles, structures, and personnel at range using a suite of different rounds. From standard anti-tank and high-explosive rounds to smoke, illumination, and even airburst munitions, the system allows a squad to tackle unexpected threats without changing primary weapons. This latest contract with Denmark underscores the platform’s enduring relevance and Saab’s key role in providing cutting-edge defensive capabilities to allied nations.
