The Republic of Korea Selects L3Harris for AEW&C Aircraft Program

by Jesmitha

The Republic of Korea has selected L3Harris Technologies to supply its next-generation Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft, finalizing a major defense contract valued at over $2.26 billion. This strategic program will see L3Harris deliver a fleet of modified Bombardier Global 6500 jets, significantly enhancing the Republic of Korea Air Force’s (ROKAF) mission readiness and aerial surveillance capabilities.

To execute this complex project, L3Harris is leading a powerhouse industry consortium. The team includes Bombardier, providing the high-performance Global 6500 airframe; Israel Aerospace Industries’ ELTA Systems, contributing advanced radar and sensor technology; and Korean Air, which will handle critical aircraft modification, systems integration, and long-term maintenance. This collaboration brings together world-class, combat-proven expertise to create a formidable AEW&C platform.

The new aircraft are designed to provide a decisive tactical advantage. They will fly faster, operate longer, and cruise at higher altitudes for improved safety and endurance. The core of their capability is a sophisticated, battle-tested Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar system. This technology, featuring advanced sensor miniaturization, will deliver extensive radar coverage to more quickly detect, track, and classify potential threats. Furthermore, the advanced communications suite will ensure seamless interoperability with the United States, NATO, and other coalition partners, creating a networked battlespace compatible with fifth-generation aircraft.

Leadership from all partner companies emphasized the program’s strategic importance. L3Harris Chair and CEO Christopher Kubasik stated the fleet would strengthen a key American ally in the Indo-Pacific, a region of rising geopolitical tensions. Beyond the initial aircraft deliveries, the program includes a vital industrial partnership with Korean industry, which will lead in operating, maintaining, and meeting any future manufacturing requirements. This ensures the development of a robust domestic special mission aircraft sector, directly contributing to South Korea’s national defense capabilities for decades to come.
