Pratt & Whitney, a division of RTX, has officially inaugurated its European Technology and Innovation Center (ETIC) in the Netherlands, marking a strategic expansion of its global research network. This first-of-its-kind facility for the company in Europe will serve as an independent hub for pioneering next-generation propulsion technologies, with a sharp focus on enhancing sustainability through advanced gas turbine systems, hybrid-electric concepts, and hydrogen propulsion.

The establishment of ETIC underscores Pratt & Whitney’s commitment to deepening its collaborative ties with European industry leaders and academic institutions. By tapping into the Netherlands’ renowned engineering talent and rich aerospace history, the center aims to accelerate the development of high-impact technologies crucial for the future of eco-friendly aviation.

“ETIC represents a significant milestone, establishing a dedicated European base for frontier technology research,” said Michael Thacker, Pratt & Whitney’s senior vice president of Engineering and Technology. “It complements our global engineering footprint and allows us to fully leverage the exceptional innovation ecosystem here, fostering powerful collaborations between industry, academia, and government.”

Strategically co-located with Collins Aerospace’s existing European Innovation Hub in Houten, the center builds upon RTX’s growing presence in the region. This move follows recent partnership agreements, including a master research accord with the prestigious Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). To further integrate into this academic network, Pratt & Whitney has also secured dedicated office space at TU Delft’s Aerospace Innovation Hub.

Professor Henri Werij, Dean of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft, welcomed the deepened collaboration, noting that direct engagement with the Houten team and seamless access to the university’s ecosystem are vital for developing sustainable aviation technologies and nurturing future industry talent.

The initiative has also garnered support from the Dutch government. Tjerk Opmeer, deputy director-general for business and innovation at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, stated that the center aligns with the national vision of accelerating sustainable aviation through innovation and international cooperation.

This expansion adds to RTX’s substantial European workforce of 21,000, which includes approximately 300 employees in the Netherlands and a major engineering and manufacturing presence of over 7,000 Pratt & Whitney personnel in Poland.
